Keeping Your ATM Clean: Step-by-Step Guide
A clean ATM works better and looks cared for. This guide covers the outside of the machine: the parts your staff can safely wipe down.
Before you start
Clean the outside of the ATM only. Do not open the cabinet or the safe, and you do not need to switch the ATM off.
Clean when nobody is using the machine. If wiping the screen opens a menu, press Cancel.
Use a soft, lint-free cloth
A clean microfibre cloth is ideal. Avoid scourers, rough rags and anything abrasive, which can scratch the touchscreen and the fascia.
Spray the cloth, not the machine
Use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Spray it onto the cloth until it is damp, not wet. Never spray directly onto the ATM, and keep liquid out of the slots and gaps. Do not use bleach.
Wipe the screen
Wipe the screen gently with light pressure. Some cleaners, including strong alcohol, can damage ATM screens and their anti-glare coating, so stick to a mild cleaner. Finish with a dry part of the cloth to remove streaks.
Clean the keypad
Spilt drinks, food and grime build up around the keys and make them stick. Wipe each key and the gaps around it with the damp cloth. If a key still sticks or does not respond after cleaning, call support.
Wipe around the card reader
Wipe the plastic surround of the card slot only. Never insert anything into the card slot: no cloths, cards or tools. Cleaning inside the reader needs a purpose-made cleaning card and is done by a technician.
While you are there, look at the slot. If anything looks loose, added or different, do not use the ATM and call us.
Receipt and cash slots
Wipe around the receipt slot and the cash slot. Do not push the cloth inside, and never force the cash shutter open.
The cabinet and signage
Wipe the sides, top and any topper or signage to remove dust, fingerprints and grime. Outdoor and through-the-wall ATMs pick up more dirt, so give them extra attention.
How often
A quick wipe of the screen, keypad and slots once a week suits most venues. Busy or outdoor sites may need it more often. One ATM maker recommends cleaning the fascia and outside panels every week, because they get smudged in normal use.
Stuck?
Call support with your terminal ID ready. You’ll find it on a receipt or docket, or at the top right of the ATM’s management screen.
